Let me first state that I bought this (and the matching bed) for myself and my boyfriend. I believe it is really meant to be a children's bed, due to the size. However, we are small-ish people and don't mind sleeping on a full/double. Also, for reference, I am a 30 yo female who is somewhat handy, but not overly strong. I am 5'4" and 140lbs. I have a physical job, but do not work out much. I put this and the bed together in one day over a 6 hour period.

I bought it for my new Sleep Number bed. I put it together right away and did not get the Sleep Number until later, so I first tried it with a foam mattress. The mattress is about 10 inches thick, the SN slightly less. However, due to the height of the bed, this is tall. If meant for kids, it isn't meant for little kids.

Of course, it's particle board. What isn't these days? I looked, and you have to spend 4x more $$ for solid wood. The finish is nice, and fairly convincing for faux. What you cant see is that shelf is coated in a black material that seems harder and maybe more water resistant than the rest of the piece. You can't really tell (except by touch) unless the thing is in direct sunlight. However, it looks like it would be easier to wipe away spills and prevent staining or discoloration, which is a positive in my book.

The backboard can be nailed in, or not. There are no holes for electronics, which is why I picked this bed, but you could easily cut some with a bit of care and an exacto blade. The backboard is thicker than most I've seen for pre-fab furniture, so you should probably do it on a flat surface prior to nailing it on. Everything else is predrilled and lines up well.

The only downside is that is connects to the bed via two tiny holes and two less-than-impressive bolts. You could easily take the screw/bolt to a hardware store and get something more substantial (like with a nut and washers) - which is something I plan to do since it creaks a bit with "vigorous" activity.

Also, once against the wall it creates a nice hollow space. As long as you don't need to get the items out any time soon, you could easily store stuff under it.

Overall, I would say you probably get what you pay for in terms of lasting durability but it is definitely a nice piece for the price - and it is heavier than expected. It came in one box. I was able to drag the headboard up the stairs alone, but my boyfriend and I could BARELY get the bed in the house. I had to leave it in the dining room and move it piece my piece into the bedroom.
