"I Have A Dream"

Remembering Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

vs the Shame and Nightmare of Donald J. Trump

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on

military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching

spiritual death.” MLK

Jan. 19th was the holiday honoring Martin Luther King,, Jr. Hundreds gathered at the Hilo Bayfront, and at other sites in Hawaii and beyond, for a rally to honor Rev. King and to stand for Justice, Peace, and Aloha ‘Aina. MLK had a big influence on activism . His commitment to non-violence is central. In Hawaii we call it Kapu Aloha. It must be our guiding light in all that we do. King talked about the evil triplets: Racism, Militarism, and Extreme Materialism. Those evil triplets are becoming ever more visible. Donald Trump’s ICE raids on brown and black immigrants are blatant violations of civil rights. Trump has proposed a massive increase of the US military budget to more than $1.5 TRILLION while gutting programs for basic human needs – food assistance, medical care, housing, etc. and at the same time providing tax cuts for the Billionaire class.

In Hawaii, Native Hawaiians (Kanaka Maoli) are being hit hard. Cost of living, especially housing, has forced more and more Hawaiians out of Hawaii, while Billionaires grab up more and more Hawaiian land for vacation estates.. Jan. 17th marked 133 years since the illegal overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani by business interest with the direct assistance of the US military. Illegal annexation and illegal statehood followed. Hawaii is now one of the most militarized places in the world., It has a greater percentage of land controlled by the US military than any state in the US with military toxins polluting our air, land, and water.

Hawaii and the world need a grassroots movement led by young people committed to Kapu Aloha (non-violence) to stand up for Peace, Justice, and Aloha ‘Aina to prevent global nuclear war and climate disaster. Once again, we need to take care of the earth so the earth will take care of us.

No Lie Can Live Forever!

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” MLK

Defuse Nuclear War!

nukes

A world with nuclear weapons and unchallenged lawlessness by the Trump administration is a very dangerous world! New START, the last bilateral treaty limiting U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, is about to expire. Now is the time to demand that both countries agree to save the treaty and stop a new arms race.

Tell your Members of Congress to do everything they can to extend New START.

Take Action Now!

This month, Defuse Nuclear War is organizing a week of action starting January 18 to demand that the United States and Russia renew the New Strategic Arms Control Treaty (New START), the last bilateral U.S.-Russian treaty limiting both countries’ nuclear arsenals, which expires after February 4, 2026.

Together, the U.S. and Russia have almost 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons, which are very much capable of destroying the world as we know it. If both countries agree to extend these limits, it represents a minimal step to stop a bad situation from getting worse. This matters, because every nuclear weapon, and every new weapons system, is an opportunity for a mistake, a rash decision, or a moment of overconfidence with unthinkable consequences.

Why February 6 Could Bring Us Closer to Nuclear Annihilation

When a key treaty expires on February 5, Russian and American leaders will face no barriers whatsoever to the expansion

of their nuclear arsenals or to any other steps that might increase the danger of a thermonuclear conflagration.
