of Darkness!”
The above words of wisdom are from long time peace activist, and former UH Manoa theology professor, James W. Douglass.
What are some of the signs that we are living in the heart of darkness? I am sure we can all add to this list. Here are some. More and more Kanaka Maoli are being forced out of their Homeland by Trump cuts to Hawaiian programs for health, education, housing, etc. There are now more Hawaiians living OUTSIDE of Hawaii than in Hawaii. Billionaires are grabbing up more and more land in Hawaii. The “Big 5” is now the “Big 37”. See https://malu-aina.org/?p=11587 Hawaii is the most militarized state in the U.S. and one of the most militarized places on the planet, and now on the edge of becoming a major high tech arms factory. The US plans to actually spend $2.5 TRILLION as its National Security Budget in 2027. https://www.counterpunch.org/2026/04/10/americas-2-5-trillion-national-security-budget-for-fy-2027/ This budget reflects the US Empire’s focus on wars, wars, and more wars, in Iran, Gaza, Venezuela, Cuba, Ukraine, etc.
The Ceasefire between the US and Iran is now in question. The Strait of Hormuz tensions are escalating. US and Iran are again trading shots. The planet is on the edge of Climate Disaster and World War III.
Trump just said – If Iran targets US ships Iran will be “blown off the face of the earth.”

5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
