CMV = Corrections, Military, Veterans
Committee
Members:
We just heard from
Representative Sonny Ganaden that these two identical resolutions
will be heard on Friday, March 19, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. by the CMV
House Committee.
We need you to send in a
written testimony by Thursday, March 19th by 9:00 a.m.
The testimony may be short but
we need this support for these resolutions!
Steps on how to send in your
testimony:
To testify online, first, register. Go to
the “Hawaii State Legislature” website: www.capitol.hawaii.gov. In the top right corner click on
“register”. Register with your name, organization (if
applicable), phone number, email address and a password.
Once registered, just click on “Sign In” in
the top right corner of the website and you can sign-in with
your email address. In the upper left-hand corner is a space for
“Bill Status/Measure Status”. Type in “HCR40” (or HR32). This
will allow testimony online. Click on “Submit Testimony”. Click
on “Continue” next to HCR40 and this should allow you to submit
testimony.
Ask someone to assist you if possible.
If the resolution is not yet scheduled for
a hearing, you cannot submit testimony. The committee may
schedule the hearing at the last minute, so it may help to
prepare a written testimony ahead of time.
Suggestions on what to write: The
Department of Public Safety has expressed openness to experiment
with Faith Pods here in Hawai`i. They encouraged Ohana
Ho`opakele to reintroduce this resolution that was introduced
last year but did not pass due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Main
point is to support this resolution to request the Department of
Public Safety to allow Faith Pods based on Kapu Aloha to be
established within each correction center. Using your own words
is most effective. Some of what you can emphasize:
1. Your relationship to a pa`ahao
(incarcerated person).
2. Faith Pods are the first step in
building Pu`uhonua or wellness centers based on healing.
3. Faith Pods have been allowed in North
American correctional centers, like at Saguaro Correctional
Center in Eloy, AZ.
4. Faith Pods allow a “safe place” from the
influence of gangs that allow for establishing Hawaiian cultural
practices.
5. “Kapu Aloha” as practiced on Mauna Kea
models the spirit of the Faith Pods.
6. (Best to use your own ideas and words!)
Mahalo plenty!
