Some very exciting news about our brewery is just around the corner.  Here's where you'll see it first!  And, for even more information, go to our webpage!

Upcoming Events:

The past couple months have been busy for us, which is a great problem to have!  If you missed our events here's a recap of how they went:

Stereo Advantage:  I purchased my first plasma TV from The Advantage Company many years ago.  What a treat it was to celebrate the Grand Opening of the newest store!  This was the first “happy hour” Stereo Advantage has ever done.  We had the opportunity to meet several customers and employees.  We hope they continue to host these tastings, and to be invited again.

Gene McCarthys:  Craft beer culture is changing in Buffalo, and it shows at Better Beverage Society.  With almost 70 people drinking our beers alongside delicious food prepared by chef Dustin, we received a lot of great  feedback from an enthusiastic crowd.  It was also very exciting to see the new brewing space in construction.  We can’t wait for the Old First Ward Brewing Company at McCarthy’s to open!

The Kegworks Store:

This was also the first tasting at Kegworks new retail store in Kenmore.  If you haven’t been there yet – and you enjoy a drink now and again - you need to go.  Like, right now.  We had almost 80 people out to try our beer at this event – it got so full, there were no parking spots for a while!  Check Facebook for pictures of the event.  Kegworks is an excellent Buffalo success story and the folks that work there are great.  We look forward to working with them in the future.

There will be more too!  Stay tuned in and check our website often for updates on News and Events.

Whats in the fridge?

Who?:
Captain Lawrence - Liquid Gold
What?:
Belgian Pale Ale - 6.0%
Where?:
Elmsford, NY (one hour North of Brooklyn)
Why?:
Captain Lawrence is a New York brewery that's new to the Buffalo area.  This Belgian Pale Ale is a perfect match for the hot summer we've been having. Pours a deep yellow with minimal head. The aroma carries hints of banana, clove, pepper and bready malts.  It has just the right amount of carbonation to have a crisp, smooth finish.  If you are looking for a Belgian-style beer to match with the heat, look no further.

Blogging:  A Hoppy Paradox

Anyone interested in an all New York state hopped IPA? Sadly, we didn’t actually come up with this idea on our own volition, as great as it is.  We came to this idea after realizing how few hops there are everywhere else.  Read More

Whats brewing?

In our last newsletter, we discussed changes we were making to Blonde Peach, our Belgian-style summer ale brewed with peaches.  The beer that resulted was (in our opinion) very good – but we felt it could still be better – so we’re already planning our next batch.  In this batch, we’ll be using local peaches from Singer Farms out of Appleton, NY.  We’re going to switch back to the original Belgian yeast strain we used to make this beer, which originated from Duvel. We’ve also invested in some better temperature control equipment.  With all these new changes, we can't wait to share it with you!

We’ll also be experimenting with a recipe for a brown porter shortly.  A brown porter is a beer style that originated in the UK, and is a bit sweeter and less roasty than its American porter counterpart.  Brown porters typically taste caramelly, nutty, toffee, and just a little roasty.  We’ll be sure to let you know how it goes!

Sam Mule BDBC correspondent

Dear Sam Mule

Dear Sam,

I am fairly new to the craft brew world. I lived my life in the aura of the large commercialized breweries that flood our mainstream medium. Then I woke up one day in a very dark place and realized that it was time to make a change. Ever since, I have been trying to expand my palate. What type of beers do you recommend to someone new to the craft brew game? -Kevin from North Buffalo-

Kevin, this is a question that I can easily relate to. For the longest time I drank straight from the trough. It takes a while to prime one’s palate for the stronger stuff. Lagers and pilsners are the easiest way to start out. Sam Adams Noble Pils, Pilsner Urquell, and Great Lakes Elliot Ness are easily approachable and a tasty start. To follow that up you will definitely need to try a Hefeweizen which is a German wheat beer. Weihenstephaner Hefeweiss is made by the world's oldest brewery and makes the best example of this style. Once you feel like you can play in the big leagues, it's time to move on the fastest growing and most popular style of beer, the India Pale Ale (IPA.) Community Beer Works makes an IPA simply called "The IPA". Typically this style is very bitter, but CBW's has tons of hop flavor. The best part of this beer is that it's made right here in Buffalo! Feel free to give us feedback on any of these beers or any beers that have helped your transition from beer blob to beer snob. Enjoy!
