It is frustrating finding a good civil package that seemlessly works with Bricscad. We are now too heavily invested in Bricscad to be making a switch to something else, but our civil department is clamoring for more efficient tools. We are currently at V9, and been reluctant to upgrade due to bad experience from v6 to v8(just a beta of v9), but v9 is so quirky and has too many bugs. We will be updgrading to v12 in the next few days in hopes it fixes a lot of v9's problems, but the powers that be do not want split versions in house, and CivilCAD will only work with v9 or v6, so they do not want to pursue CivilCAD. They really want Carlson, but, alas, no support for Bricscad.
This is excellent civil design software and we use it to design roads, stormwater, dams etc. It does not work within AutoCAD or Bricscad but is able to write out to CAD files which are then externally referenced into CAD for touch over, title block etc.
I use Carlson Software. www.carlson-sw.com and though they do not operate in bricscad you can use their version of Intellicad. I find that their software is the most user friendly and intuitive of any of the packages on the market and they have added routines to their software that just makes civil work easier to get done.
Carlson Civil provides the most robust automation and ease-of-use of any civil design solution available today, and it does dynamic updating without a single custom object. Get 3D intersection design, multi-baseline road networks, lot layout, storm and utility analysis and design, plus much, much more.
What I want to say is, you should take into account your career path in making this decisiion. If you move over to a company that is not using Civil 3D you will find yourself out of the running for jobs that require Civil 3D skills down the road. Just look at the civil job postings on the web and you'll find that the majority require Civil 3D skills. Autodesk is the Microsoft of the design world so you pretty much have to keep current to stay viable in the job market.
From what I've seen and read Carlson software is aimed at the survey community, and it is very popular there. Excellent tools for importing, processing and analysis of survey but perhaps not so much for civil design. The software is available in either an Intellicad or ACad version so you may want to find out which one you'll be using.
Carlson runs on top of a CAD program, either Autodesk or on free IntelliCad. For many users, the free CAD program is fine. We need power to do things with data and for the money Carlson Civil on Autodesk Civil 3D is the way to go. This gives you the power of Carlson commands and the native software of over 95% of our civil site deliverables.
There are modules and suites which are a collection of modules. Carlson offers a standalone 3D Program I like called Precision 3D. This Civil Suite has most of what we use and is a good place to start. It has the Survey, Civil, Hydrology, and GIS Modules. Their Takeoff Program has an AutoCAD engine built in to get more power. The Takeoff Suite has more modules and runs on IntelliCad or your copy of AutoCAD.
