The future of the Eastern Shore will be created by the people who live here, who work here,
and who build a life for themselves and their families here. The best way to build a better future for the Eastern Shore is to build stronger communities by helping to build strong families. For September's newsletter we are focusing on the Youth Development
programs of ChesMRC and how they are helping lead to stronger families in our communities.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
The transition to a new culture can be especially difficult for children. They need to learn a new language, form new
friendships and adapt to a new education system. When children make
these transitions quickly, they blossom and adapt eagerly to the new information.
Getting children help early makes the rest of their education experience more enjoyable and productive and avoids the social costs related
to poor school outcomes.
The after school academic and enrichment programs are not only geared to improve students' scholastic performance, but also
to encourage community involvement from parents of these students. All of our youth programming is funded by state and local grants, however as each year brings decreased funding through these grants, the need for support from within our community grows. Please
help us by donating

21st Century Community Learning Center Grant
ChesMRC in partnership with Talbot County Public Schools (TCPS)
and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)
is working hard to make transitions to a new culture and learning experiences as quick and as painless as possible for our youth. Thanks to funding provided from a 21st Century Community Learning
Center
(21stCCLC)
grant, ChesMRC has been able to offer after school programming that provides 8 additional hours per week throughout the school year with help in reading, math and science for grades 1-5.
Monday marked the 1st day for year 4 of our 5-year program with 90 students currently enrolled. There are lots of new and exciting things
happening this year such as partnering with Sodexo through TCPS to provide the dinner meal program ensuring each child
has a hot meal and introducing several new clubs for enrichment including cub scouts, girl scouts and soccer. ChesMRC is always looking for volunteers who enjoy working
with children. If you are interested in volunteering, please
click here to submit an application. or contact Melissa Micriotti at 443-786-1120.

Talbot Family Network - Healthy Habits Grant

This year ChesMRC also received funding from Talbot Family Network (TFN)
which will help fund our health enrichment classes and wellness events. Every child in the after school program will be exposed to some type of health curriculum from
Growing Healthy Habits,
Grow it, Try it, Like it, Nutrition Nuggets and
Gardening for Nutrition.
Health Outreach Coordinator Michelle Hammond will be heading the program and pictured above is the 1st lesson featuring "MyPlate"
to identify the knowledge children currently have on healthy foods. To read more about the program -
