Dear Friends,
I am a lawyer at a legal aid office in Maine. I also worked for many years at a legal aid office in Florida before I came to Maine. In both places, I have represented many Haitians and I have always tried to help the Haitian community.
The work I am doing now is trying to make sure that all Haitians who have TPS know about the government's recent decision to extend TPS for Haitians. As you probably know, after the earthquake in 2010, the US government granted Temporary Protected Status to
Haitians, a program through which Haitians can obtain temporary legal status and employment authorization in the US. To the thousands of Haitians who would otherwise be facing deportation, TPS is crucially important.
The most recent period of TPS granted to Haitians will expire in January. Recently, the government announced that TPS for Haitians will be extended until July of 2017. That is very good news.
Most of the Haitians who have TPS have employment authorization cards (work permits) which expire on January 22, 2016. Many Haitians will assume that they can wait until December or January to file the applications for TPS re-registration and for new work
permits. However, the deadline is actually October 26, 2015, and it is critical that all Haitians with TPS know that they must file their paperwork before October 26.
I have attached a leaflet that explains this briefly. I would like to ask that you do what you can to publicize this.
1. Please tell everyone you know about this.
2. Please make copies of the leaflet and hand them out.
3. Please forward this email to all your email contacts and lists.
4. Please put up a message on Facebook or any other social websites.
5. If you know anyone who has a radio program in Creole, please ask them
to make announcements on the radio.
6. If YOU have a radio program in Creole, please make announcements.
7. If you know any pastors, please ask them to make announcements at services.
8. If YOU are a pastor, please make announcements at services and please send this information to all the other pastors you know.
9. If you know any Haitian community organizations, please contact them and ask them to distribute this information to their members and to make announcements at their meetings.
10. If you know any Haitian businesses, please ask them to put up some information about this in a place where people can see it.
I would emphasize that it is extremely important that people file their applications before October 26. However, if a person is unable to file by October 26, it is possible that Immigration might accept an application which is filed late. It may be difficult to convince Immigration to accept a late application and there is a strong possibility that a late application will be rejected. If you talk to anyone who fails to file their application by October 26, please call me and I can help them find an attorney.
Haitians who have had been arrested or who have had problems with the police should talk to an immigration lawyer before filing an application
to re-register for TPS.
Under some circumstances, Haitians who have never applied for TPS can file a late application. People who want to know if they are eligible to apply for TPS should talk to an immigration lawyer immediately.
Please call me with any questions.
Thank you.

PS - If I send you more than one email, I apologize!
Chè Zanmi,
Mwen travay nan yon biwo sèvis legal nan eta Maine; se avoka mwen ye. Avan mwen te vini Maine, mwen te travay pou anpil ane nan sèvis
legal nan Florida. Nan tou de kote sa yo, mwen reprezante Ayisyen e mwen toujou eseye ede moun nan kominote Ayisyènn nan.
Travay ke m-ap fè kounyea se pou asire ke tout Ayisyen ki gen TPS konnen ke gouvènman te fèk pran desizyon pou bay yon extansyon pou Ayisyen ki gen TPS. Ou kapag gentan konnen sa, men apre tranbleman tè nan ane 2010, gouvènman USA te bay TPS pou Ayisyen kote
Ayisyen te kapab jwenn kondisyon legal pou yon tan (sa yo rele "temporary legal status") epi tou yo te kapab travay nan peyi USA. Pou anpil anpil, milye Ayisyen, TPS trè enpòtan paske si yo pat genyen yo tap oblije retounen an Ayiti.
TPS ke yo te bay dènyeman ap fini, l-ap expire nan mwa Janvye kap vini. Men gouvènman fèk anonse ke yap bay yon lòt extansyon, y-ap bay pi plis tan pou Ayisyen gi gen TPS rere nan peyi a rive jis nan Jiyè 2017. Sa se yon bonn nouvel.
Pifò nan Ayisyen ki gen TPS genyen yon kat travay (sa yo rele "work permit") ki pral fini, li pral expire le 22 Janvye 2016. Anpil Ayisyen pral kwè ke you kapab rete tann jis nan mwa Desanm ou Janvye pou yo file re-aplikasyon pou TPS e pou kat travay yo.
Men si yon moun pa kapab fè re-aplikasyon li avan le 26 Oktòb, li posib ke biwo Imigrasyon ta aksepte yon aplikasyon ki fèt an reta. Li kapab difisil pou fè biwo Imigrasyon aksepte yon aplikasyon ki an reta e gen anpil chans ke yo ta refize li. Si ou pale avèk yon moun ki pa kapab fè re-aplikasyon li avan le 26 Oktòb, tanpri rele mwen e mwen kapab ede yo jwenn yon avoka.
Ayisyen kit e arete oswa ki te gen pwoblem ak lapolis tad we pale ak yon avoka imigrasyon anvan yo voye yon aplikasyon pou renouvle TPS la.
Nan kèk sityasyon, Ayisyen ki pa t janm aplike pou TPS kapab voye yon aplikasyon anreta. Moun kit a vle konnen si yo elijib pou aplike pou TPS tad we pale ak yon avoka imigrasyon touswit.
Tanpri rele mwen si ou ta gen kesyon.
Mèsi.
