This collaborative aims to assist immunization professionals with easily accessible tools, resources and experts for vaccination site operations. We ask that you please complete this short survey (7-10 minutes) by November 10, 2021 to help us understand the current and potential state of mass vaccination sites in your country.

HLN’s Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE) chosen as a Digital Public Goods Standard

HLN Consulting is thrilled to announce that the Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE) project has been chosen by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) as innovative open technology and listed in their Digital Public Goods registry. Technologies included in the list are considered to be digital public goods in alignment with the Digital Public Goods Standard. ICE now appears in the Digital Public Goods registry where it is discoverable as a digital public good and reflected on a growing network of catalogs and aggregated lists of digital public goods. The DPGA believes that sharing digital innovation is crucial to building a more equitable world.

The DPGA is a new international initiative that aims to accelerate the attainment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in low- and middle-income countries by investing and sharing open technologies. This includes open source software, data, AI models, standards, and content that adhere to privacy and other applicable best practices. The Digital Public Goods Standard is a set of specifications and guidelines designed to maximize consensus about whether something conforms to the definition of digital public goods laid out by the UN Secretary-General in the 2020 Roadmap to Digital Cooperation.

ICE is a free, open-source immunization forecasting evaluation and software system whose default immunization schedule supports all routine childhood, adolescent, and adult immunizations in the United States. It is based on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). As an open source platform ICE can be adapted to meet the guidelines used in other countries.  ICE utilizes its immunization rules and patient data to evaluate and return the validity of each immunization in the patient’s history along with one or more evaluation reasons. It also returns a recommendation for each vaccine group along with one or more recommendation reasons.

Noam Arzt, President of HLN Consulting stated “For us, being recognized as a digital public good means expanding the exposure to the ICE open source software and minimizing the barriers to installing and using ICE anywhere in the world. With the COVID pandemic still present in many countries worldwide, ICE is a major open source tool available to ensure that the proper vaccinations are administered at the right time.”

Arzt added that “While ICE rules are currently based on US ACIP recommendations, it can be adapted to include rules based on WHO clinical guidelines or country-specific requirements.” Arzt emphasized that that flexibility is one of the key reasons why HLN Consulting chose open source as their development model nearly ten years ago when HLN began the development of ICE. HLN developed ICE in collaboration with several state and local public health agencies who collaborated on the project. For any inquiries on the ICE project please reach out to Noam Arzt. For more information on the Digital Public Goods Alliance please reach out tohe...@digitalpublicgoods.netClick here for the press release.

Online survey: Infant RSV monoclonal antibody device/container assessment

Dear colleagues,

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common cause of childhood acute lower respiratory infection that leads to hospitalizations and deaths, particularly in children younger than 6 months. Product development efforts are underway to make available a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that protects infants from RSV. PATH is currently collecting feedback on the most appropriate container/device to administer one such RSV mAb to infants. The goal of the project is to inform infant RSV mAb product development.

We would like to invite TechNet members with expertise in childhood immunizations to complete an online survey to contribute feedback in selecting the most appropriate container/device to administer the RSV mAb product to infants. The survey should take 10-20 minutes to complete and can be accessed until November 15, 2021 by clicking on the link here: RSV mAb stakeholder survey.

If the link above does not work, try copying the link below into your web browser:

Your contributions are invaluable to this effort, and we look forward to learning from your insights! Thank you very much, in advance, for your time.

Best,

HLN updates COVID-19 vaccine support in its Award Winning ICE Open Source Immunization Forecaster v1.31.1

ice logo transparentOn October 25, 2021, HLN released a new version (v1.31.1) of the Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE) in support of updates to the COVID-19 vaccine. ICE is a state-of-the-art open source software system that provides clinical decision support for immunizations for use in Immunization Information Systems (IIS), Electronic Health Record (EHR), and Personal Health Record (PHR) Systems.

  • COVID-19 Update:
    • Added additional support and logic in ICE to handle the following:
      • COVID-19 Booster Dose for Pfizer Vaccine
  • Performance Improvement

Note about Upcoming ICE Release (Tentatively Scheduled for November 2021)

  • As always, HLN is actively monitoring all news and updates in regards to new and existing COVID-19 vaccines. For the next ICE release, we will be working on adding additional support and logic (based on the latest published guidance) in ICE and may include some or all of the following changes:
    • COVID-19 Booster Dose for Moderna and Janssen Vaccines
    • Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for Patients Age 5 - 11 years old
    • Mixing and Matching COVID Vaccines

The full software release is available for download at https://cdsframework.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ICE/pages/18972704/Downloads

Plans for COVID-19 Support in ICE

Once a vaccine has been approved for use by the FDA (either Expanded Access, EUA, or full licensure), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will hold an emergency meeting and publish recommendations in a very quick time frame (i.e., days). HLN intends to release a version of ICE that includes updated COVID-19 forecasting as early as possible. The initial release will contain COVID-19 logic that is known at the time of the release. As additional, relevant information on COVID-19 becomes available from official sources, HLN will continue to release additional versions of ICE, at appropriate times.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please e-mail us at i...@hln.com.
