I think there may be some Phreds in the Delaware / Maryland area who might be able to help with this one.

My brother and I plan on riding the GAP / C&O this summer.  Our sister has bought a house near Cape May NJ so we thought we’d ride from DC -> Delmarva -> Lewes Ferry.  I think her new house is less than 10 miles from the ferry.

Originally we thought we’d go from Annapolis to Delmarva but it appears that the Chesapeake Bay Bridge prohibits bicycles.

Suggestions as to how to get from DC to Lewes Ferry will be appreciated.

Thanks

bill

I believe the bridge you would want to cross is the William Preston Lane Jr Memorial Bridge. According to the Maryland DOT (http://www.marylandroads.com/index.aspx?Pageid=596):

BRIDGES

The following bridges were not designed to accommodate bicycle or pedestrian traffic.

  • Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge - US 40 over the Susquehanna River
  • Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge - US 301 over the Potomac River
  • William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge - US 50/301 over Chesapeake Bay

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA), which oversees the management of the facilities, recognizes that these prohibitions may create difficulties for some cyclists. As a courtesy, the MdTA offers the following services:

William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge:

A private, professional service is available, for a fee to assist cyclists over the Chesapeake Bay. It is suggested that you contact the service at least 24 hours in advance of your crossing to verify the location and time of pick-up. For more information, contact the MdTA at 410-974-0341

Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge and Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge:

The MdTA may, if manpower and time are available, transport cyclists and their bicycles across the bridge for a fee. This service is provided as a courtesy only when circumstances permit. It is not an official operating policy of the MdTA. Again you should contact MdTA at least 24 hours prior to arrival. The telephone numbers are 410-575-7162 for the Hatem Bridge, and 301-259-4444 for the Nice Bridge.

For more information about the Maryland Transportation Authority, or its facilities, please contact:www.mdtransportationauthority.com

If you want to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, there is a shuttle. Info found towards the bottom of this page:

Yes;

I think I mixed up the bridges.  On the bridge site (baybridge.com) they call it the Bay Bridge ( William Preston Lane in smaller lettering) and I think I got confused because there are two bridges referencing US301.

That is the bridge. On their site, it states: “The MDTA no longer provides a drive-over service.”

I’ll have to check out this service

Thx

Bill,

There are a couple of services that will provide shuttle services.  I have not used any of them, only giving web research info.  The first is Kent Island Express http://www.kentislandexpress.com and the second is company that the MDT web site references the Kent Island Shuttle Service: 410-726-3990.  I hope this helps.

It looks like they must be one in the same.  I saw the website and googled the name.  They are similar enough that I clicked on the express site thinking it was the shuttle site.  When I found there were two with similar names, I tried KentIslandShuttle.com.  It look me to KentIslandExpress.com.  I did a whois lookup over at godaddy and both are registered by Kent Island Express.

Kent Island Express doesn’t mention bicycles on their site so I emailed them.  The email I got back said they transport bikes for $35 for the first two and $10 / bike after that.
