Several years ago after completing a long ride of several hundred miles from Brookings, Oregon to Sausalito, Ca with a couple
friends we overnighted in a B&B and across the street was a cafe/bar where we were ate. The owner came to the table and chatted with us and asked where we were from. We answered that we started riding in Oregon and were finished with this ride in Sausalito. His comment was "Why in the hell would a person do that!" All riders get comments similar to that quite often. As Steve said "different strokes for different folks." Seems to be a perfect reason to ride! I have at 85 wanted to ride again but a spill now would not be a good thing, so the bike hangs in the garage but still loved.

For myself, I have to periodically remind myself that I am not in anyway superior to others because of my own eccentricities including doing unsupported bike touring. Some of the biggest narcissists I know are bicyclists. So I I try to stay humble and just say to myself, "different strokes for different folks". I think we bike tourists, including myself, enjoy shocking the non-cyclists. The look of disbelief is a bit of an ego boost. I admit it. Bicycle touring is a wonderful way to experience the world. I love it. And I enjoy the small notoriety I get within my little world. I am glad to help people think about the possibilities of seeing the world in a different sort of way. We are all "Legends in Our Own Mind". We're all just kids on the playground. Both trying to fit in, and setting ourselves apart. I did go to Youtube and watched the movie which I enjoyed. Robert Donat, Deborah Kerr, Glynis Johns (still alive at age 99!) and a very lovely Ann Todd. Donat was a great actor and unfortunately died in his 50s. All fine British Actors... In the UK the film was titled "Perfect Strangers" Steve O'Rourke Baldwin, Wisconsin My Crazyguyonabike Bike Touring Site: cgoab.com/ScoutSteve Blogspot: https://scoutsteve.blogspot.com On Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 12:47:04 PM UTC-6 roamic wrote:
