No, Mark, there really are palm trees in some places (outdoors) in Ireland, and on the southwestern coast of England, because of the Gulf Stream.

Palm trees in Ireland, maybe when the land masses were closer to the equator but I think Bob was talking about 1997 A.D.

Some of Ireland's left-coast palm trees took a hit in the winter of
2010-2011. I have photos of the remains of some in the Galway harbor.
I didn't take my bicycle to Ireland in 2011, so won't be posting those.

We saw a few in the southwest on our first visit to Ireland in 1998, but
for some reason my wife continued to say I had never taken her to any
place where there were palm trees. So in 2006 we spent a few days in
Apalachicola, Florida, even though I had never committed a crime bad
enough to deserve being sent to Florida. Actually, the Apalachicola area
was pretty nice - not at all like the Florida of my imagination - but I
have a hunch it has changed a lot in the last 8 years.

West coast of Scotland is know to have "palm" threes. They might not be classed as a palm three elsewhere but for us northern hemisphere folk it is :)

Thank you Ray for enlightening me and sorry Johnny for my ignorance I
thought you were picking on poor old Bob. I here they even grow in the
Netherlands.

We were there last year. Saw palms. I'm pretty sure I have a pic of spousy with palms in the background. Can't exactly remember where but I think it was fairly early on our 10 day trip. We started in Dublin and basically went around the coast anti-clockwise which would put it in the north somewhere. But I don't think it was while we in N Ireland.

The thing is that it wasn't all that warm. I think she is wearing a decent coat in that pic.

The Gulf Stream is pretty amazing. Narvik, Norway is NORTH of the Arctic Circle and it has an ice free port year round! No Palm trees, though 😄 I'd like to cycle in Norway. It was very interesting to visit.

Chinese Windmill Palms are quite hardy. We see them here in the Pacific NW, and they are also grown on the British Isles.

Here's a good list of hardy palms:
