Yes he did advocate taking the lane. But he also threatened vehicular
homicide if he saw you doing it.
I think that he, like most morons with motors, doesn't understand the
distinction between a transportational cyclist and them recreational
types with all their racing gear. As far as the law goes, there isn't
a difference - just like there isn't a legal difference between
someone with a 35-40 mpg sedan that car pools and the punk whose papa
buys him a hummer to go back and forth to high school in.
When I'm commuting I carry my work clothes, my lunch, and a few
emergency supplies (like a rain coat even if there are no clouds when
I leave), I've recently come to the conclusion that I've been packing
too light by only having one brush with which to paint all the
motorists.
If I could ever meet up with one of them yahoos that think it terrible
that I take up the whole lane I'd like to explain to them that I'm
more than happy to share the lane with anything that will fit into the
other half of it, and that I have gone even one step further and left
room for two bikes, one on either side.
But <even/> our locomotively impaired pharmacist (who may very well be
sampling his wares) recognizes the un-workability of being a gutter
bunny.
