Adams
School's Collaboration Promotes Bike Safety
Last
week’s Adams Elementary School Family Bike Night (Bici Familia) was a tremendous success. The event was a collaboration with the City of Santa
Barbara, Santa Barbara County Association of Governments Traffic Solutions, SB Bike, COAST, Deckers and Adams Elementary School. Approximately 250
people were in attendance and food was provided by Adams’ English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC).
Families
attended a bilingual bike skills class lead by certified Instructors (LCIs) in order to review the rules of the road and how to be predictable,
visible and safe bicyclists. During the bilingual presentation, a group of volunteer bike mechanics from Bici Centro and SBici the bike club at Santa
Barbara High School offered a free tune-up for all the bikes. They were kept busy with removing training wheels, fixing flats, adjusting the height of
a saddle during the entire event.
Following
the class, COAST fitted 100 Adams students with new bike helmets that were donated by the city. COAST also adjusted existing helmets to ensure proper
fit. Then, families were invited to the blacktop for a class on bike riding skills. The entire blacktop was filled with students ranging from first
time riders to those perfecting their riding skills.
The
event’s grand finale involved Deckers donating 18 bikes that employees put together at the company’s “Bike Build” event last
month. The students receiving these bikes were selected based upon a school essay contest.
