BICHOLIM: A 35-year-old pregnant woman from Uttar Pradesh today was seriously injured when a portion of the slab of Bicholim bus stand came crushing down on her.

According to the available information one Rekhadevi (35) along with her relative Reena Gararil was sitting at the Bicholim bus stand at around 5 pm when the incident took place. As per the eye witnesses the portion of the slab came crushing down on the woman injuring her right leg.

The people called the ambulance but as they got delayed for arrival Rekhadevi was shifted to the PHC Bicholim with the help of a rickshaw. “After around 6 years she had remained pregnant and we came here after going to a doctor at Mapusa. Rekhadevi was very happy and when we arrived at the Bicholim bus stand this tragedy took place” Reena Gararil told Herald. The injured was later shifted to Asilo Mapusa.

The people have demanded that the government should immediately build a new bus stand. “This is a serious incident and there could be many more to happen. The bus stand is totally in a dilapidated condition and should be repaired. The government had announced many projects for Bicholim but not a single one has taken shape. Since last more than one year they are trying to lay foundation stone of the Bicholim bust stand but nothing fruitful is coming up” Bicholim Congress Block president, Nazir Beg told.

Bicholim MLA, Rajesh Patnekar when contacted accepted that the bus stand is old and dilapidated. “It was constructed in 1996 and itself is very old. There is a proposal of demolishing the existing bus stand and construct a new one.” Patnekar told “the plan of the new bus stand is already ready. The architect of this is from Mumbai and only one final meeting of all the stake holders is left. As far as this incident is concerned I have spoken to the MD and the chairman of the Kadamba who has assured to take necessary measures.”
