delay flights in Sydney

GALE force winds are delaying flights at Sydney airport and
continue to wreak havoc in NSW, bringing down powerlines and
trees.
Severe gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour brought down
powerlines and left residents without electricity south and west
of Sydney.
The Bureau of Meteorology was expecting winds at the airport to
hit 63km/h this morning.
"With a strong westerly like that, they're restricted to using one
of the runways," meteorologist Julie Evans told AAP.
"They don't like cross winds at the airport."
Sydney Airport Corporation duty manager Michael Samaras said
delays of 30 minutes were expected for morning flights into and
out of Sydney, and advised passengers to contact their airline.
"Let's wait and see for the afternoon," he told AAP.
The State Emergency Service has received more than 1100 calls
since yesterday afternoon after hurricane-force gusts brought down
trees in the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and south coast.
Winds of 94km/h hit the Blue Mountains early this morning, while
the Illawarra region copped severe gusts of 100km/h at 5am (AEST).
Endeavour Energy spokeswoman Kate McCue said 11,800 residents in
the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and the south coast were
still without power.
"We've taken a huge battering overnight," she said.
Massive trees have fallen across powerlines at Blackheath, Leura
and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, with the result that power is
unlikely to be restored to those areas until at least Saturday.
"They are massive trees that have brought bay by bay of powerlines
down," Ms McCue said.
