Poultry culled on sixth site in UK bird flu zone*

Last Updated: 2:36am GMT 22/11/2007

Poultry on a sixth premises were culled last night on suspicion of
having bird flu, said the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs (Defra).

The premises in Suffolk, within the existing surveillance zone and just
outside the original 1.8 mile (3km) protection zone, have been
designated the fourth "dangerous contact" site.

Last night's cull of 56,000 ducks, 9,000 turkeys and 3,000 geese was a
precautionary measure, Defra said.

The site is operated by Redgrave Poultry, which runs the other four
"dangerous contact" sites and Redgrave Park farm where the initial H5N1
virus outbreak was found. Fred Landeg, the acting chief veterinary
officer, said: "This decision has been taken based on new information
which indicates the possibility that the poultry on this premise may
have been exposed to infection."
