6.0 magnitude earthquake rocks northern Philippines
AFP, Mar 23, 2010, 02.12am IST
MANILA: A 6.0 magnitude quake rocked the northern Philippines early on
Tuesday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately
issued.
The quake struck 35 kilometres (22 miles) northeast of Laoag on the
island of Luzon at a depth of 42 km at 3:58 am (1958 GMT Monday), the
US Geological Survey said.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately
issue a tsunami warning.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental
plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
