A POWERFUL earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck deep under the South
Pacific today but no tsunami warning was issued, US monitors said.
The quake hit 8.46pm AEDT at a depth of 89km, 324km east-south-east of
Tadine in New Caledonia, the US Geological Survey said.
"No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical
earthquake and tsunami data," the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning
Centre said.
