Large 6.3-magnitude earthquake hits north of Chile: USGS

SANTIAGO, March 4 (Xinhua)-- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on
Thursday that a new 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Antofagasta in Chile's
north region.
The USGS said the earthquake was not related to the one registered on
Saturday in the center-south region of the country. Its epicenter is 87
km is northwest of Calama and 1,574 km north of the capital city of
Santiago.
The quake can be felt in the northern areas, and triggered panic.
Chile's National Emergency Office said this earthquake brings no risk
of tsunami.
Carmen Fernandez, head of the office, said it was not aftershock of
last week's megaquake.
In Calama, schools, businesses and workplaces are closed.
The northern areas affected by the quake is mainly desert. So far there
has been no no reports of casualties and material damages.

Thursday traveled to the cities of Concepcion and Talca, the
hardest-hit areas in Saturday's massive earthquake, to oversee the
armed forces' distribution of aid supplies.
In both cities, Bachelet visited the aid distribution centers for their

Aid pours into Chile as aftershocks still threaten
CONCEPCION, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Aid began to pour into Chile on
Thursday as powerful aftershocks sent terrified people scrambling back
to the hills in tsunami-prone coastal areas.
Relief materials worth 2 million U.S. dollars left China for Chile
Thursday, according to sources with the National Defense Ministry.
