MANILA, Philippines -- A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocked parts of
Mindanao today but there were no immediate reported damage or injuries,
the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said the tremor struck at 10:13 a.m.
and was centered some 59 kilometers northeast of Mati, Davao Oriental.
It was felt at Intensity 3 in Bislig City; and Intensity 2 in the
cities of Davao and Butuan.
Magnitude refers to the size or seismic energy of the earthquake while
intensity is a measure of the strength of shaking experienced in an
earthquake.
The Philippines lies on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area
where large earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.
Phivolcs said that lately about 20 quakes hit the country everyday but
only a few are felt.
