AN earthquake measuring 4.5 shook outback New South Wales early today.
Canberra seismologist Kevin McCue said the quake occurred at 1.18am
(AEDT) and was located in far western NSW about 100 kilometres
northeast of Broken Hill and a similar distance southwest of Hungerford
on the Queensland border.
Mr McCue said tremors should have been felt at Hungerford.
"It wouldn't have done any damage unless there was a homestead right on
top," he said.
"It was certainly big enough to do damage."
Mr McCue said it was unusual for an earthquake to occur in the area.
Australia generally reported two such earthquakes each year.
"It's not that rare but not that common either," he said.
