Guatemala drought threatens millions with famine in 2010: UN*

A continuing drought that has devastated three harvests in Guatemala and
southern Honduras threatens famine in 2010 for up to two million people,
including many children, the UN warned Thursday.
The "corridor of drought" is the worst in Guatemala for 30 years, with
410,000 people facing insecure access to food, said Gerard Gomez,
regional head at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The situation in southern Honduras, where more than 100,000 are
suffering malnutrition "is being complicated by the political crisis,
which has thrown 120,000 more people into poverty".
Gomez said the UN plans to launch an appeal for funds in January.
