Brazilian authorities said the truck driver lost control of the
vehicle while driving down a hill and hit a crowd of people
arriving from a religious procession in Alagoas.
The vehicle also hit three cars and five motorcycles that were
parked around the square, where hundreds were gathered in front of
a church.
Local resident Edson Chagas had his car damaged by the accident
and said that people tried to help with the victims' rescue.
"Everyone was frightened with the truck on fire and a few
motorcycles were also exploding here which left people even more
scared. In spite of everything people here are very helpful. They
got their hands into the sand and tried to remove it. They did
everything they could to try to rescue the bodies," he said.
A witness said the driver was killed at the scene after the truck
turned over and burst into flames.
Police officer Vanderlei Pereira said the cause of the accident
was being investigated.
"Whether the vehicle was overloaded, whether it wasn't prepared
for transporting the sand, whether the driver was able to drive -
all of this we will only be able to discover after the
investigation," said Mr Pereira.
Eleven people remain in hospital, two of them are reportedly in a
critical condition.
Over a thousand people were taking part in the religious festivity
to mark the feast day of the Immaculate Conception.
