New Zealand: Swarm of Earthquakes shake Christchurch again

Nine aftershocks rattle Christchurch this morning
The largest hit the scale at magnitude 5.5
City is still recovering from 6.3 which killed 182 people
POWER has been restored to homes in Christchurch after the city
was shaken awake by aftershocks, the largest of which was
magnitude 5.5.
Most of the quakes were shallow and centred east or northeast of
the city, according to GNS Science. Two at 5.5 and 4.1 occurred
closely together shortly before 6am (4am AEDT) on Monday and a 5.1
shake was also recorded at 1.27am (11.27pm AEDT).
Power was cut to 10,000 homes in the east of the city but Orion
Energy said it was restored by 8am (6am AEDT) after checks to the
network.
Mayor Bob Parker said the quakes have rattled residents and
council facilities are being checked.
"It's not a great start to a new year, but everyone is working
hard to ensure we have a resilient and safe city in the future,"
he said.
He said residents were worried about the possibility of a tsunami
from offshore quakes, but the faults offshore were short in length
and were not likely to generate a significant tsunami. The risk of
sea inundation to land was probably no more than a storm surge, he
said.
John Kiss, the night manager at the Wainoni Pak'nSave supermarket
in eastern Christchurch, said stock fell off shelves but the
aftershocks were not as bad as some last year.
"The one at 1am was pretty strong and one this morning was a
double-banger. We went and had a smoko, picked up the stuff that's
fallen off and kept on going.
"My nerves are a bit rattled."
He said many people had left the city for the summer holidays and
no one was stocking up.
The city is still recovering from a magnitude 6.3 quake that
killed 182 people on February 22 last year. It was rocked by two
quakes, measuring 6.0 and 5.8, two days before Christmas Day.
