A 17-year-old Turkish man was arrested today over the stabbing
deaths of two women from Northern Ireland in the city of Izmir, a
popular holiday destination along Turkey's Aegean coast.
The two women, identified by the Turkish press as Marion Graham
and Kathy Dinsmore, both in their early 50s, were allegedly
murdered late last night in a forest while visiting Turkey's
third-biggest city.
The suspect is thought to be the boyfriend of Shannon Graham, the
15-year-old daughter of Marion Graham. He allegedly confessed to
the crime.
Turkish local media reported that he allegedly attacked the women
because his girlfriend's mother would not allow her daughter to
marry him.
Turkish media reported that Shannon Graham contacted the
authorities to report the disappearance of her mother and her
friend.
The women, who were believed to be from County Down in Northern
Ireland, travelled to Turkey on Irish passports.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed the deaths
and said it was attempting to contact family members. "We are
providing consular assistance through the embassy in Ankara," a
spokesman said.
One of the women is understood to own a property in the resort of
Kusadasi, around 120km from Izmir.
