More than 40 per cent of Britons say they pray to God, according to a
new survey.
The study, by the Christian charity Tearfund, found that praying made
people feel "peaceful and content".
Research into the views of 1,000 adults in the UK showed that 42 per
cent said they prayed to God, with about one in six praying daily and
one in four doing so at least once a week.
After praying, 38 per cent reported feeling "peaceful and content",
while 30 per cent said they were strengthened. Top prayer topics in
order of popularity were family and friends, thanking God, guidance,
healing and global problems such as poverty, wars and disaster.
The proportion of people who prayed varied throughout the country, with
London coming up as the "prayer capital of the UK" with nearly three
quarters saying they prayed.
Yorkshire and Humberside were bottom of the prayer league table with
only 24 per cent saying that they did.
