Power Blackouts hit half of Venezuela

POWER line failures caused blackouts that affected nearly half the country today, Venezuelan officials say.

Energy Ministry official Igor Gavidia says electricity was restored to 90 per cent of the affected regions within an hour of the power outages.

Venezuelans had to cope with rolling blackouts for months last year.

The cutbacks were implemented during a drought that drove water levels to precarious lows at Guri dam, which produces most of Venezuela's electricity.

Opponents contend the government doesn't invest enough in new electrical projects to keep up with growing demand.
