THE mother of two young children found dead in a river confessed to
suffocating them before faking a car accident.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams said Shaquan Duley, of
Orangeburg, South Carolina, was initially arrested and charged with
leaving the scene of an accident.
But local authorities continued investigating elements of her story
that they believed did not add up.
She will be arraigned today and charged for the murder of her two boys,
aged 18 months and two years old, who were found strapped in their car
seats inside a submerged Chrysler sedan in the Edisto River early on
Monday.
Duley left the scene and walked almost 1.6 kilometres before she
flagged down a passing motorist to call the police as she did not have
a mobile phone, Mr Williams said.
She originally reported the incident to police as a car accident.
Unemployed Duley struggled to financially take care of her children,
and they all lived with her mother, Mr Williams said. Duley also has a
five year-old who is in the care of the grandmother.
Mr Williams described the grandmother, whose name was not released, as
a “firm individual who believed in values.”
Mother and daughter reportedly had a dispute the night before the
deaths. The alleged murders were believed to be “a direct response,” to
the alleged dispute, he added.
“[Duley] was fed up with her mother saying she wasn’t taking care of
her children,” he added.
The father of the children has not yet been located and seemingly was
not involved in their lives. Duley “was more or less being mother and
father of the children.”
