Dozens of Raging forest fires hit turkey and Greece after heatwave

Dozens of people have been evacuated from their homes in western Turkey after forest fires threatened to engulf a cluster of villages.

Strong winds fanned the flames near the town of Bergama. Hundreds of firefighters have been drafted in to tackle the fires – its reported the situation is now under control.

Strong winds are now buffeting Turkey and Greece after a two week heatwave during which temperatures topped 39 Celsius.

Fires have also broken out in several places in eastern Greece, where some houses have already been severely damaged. The region is on full alert and holidaymakers have already begun to leave.

Gusts of wind of up to 90 kilometres an hour are fanning the flames and making tackling them more difficult. Planes carrying water to douse the flames are unable to take off.
