A GUNMAN shot five people dead and critically injured one at an Arizona
residence before driving to California and killing himself, Lake Havasu
City, Arizona police said.
Late last night local time, Brian Diez, 26, shot six people at close
range in Lake Havasu City - on the border of Arizona and California -
before kidnapping his two children, driving three hours to a relative’s
home, and taking his own life.
"This is the worst shooting in the history of Lake Havasu City,"
Lieutenant Richie Sloma told local news website
havasunews.com
The four found deceased at the scene were 23-year-old Deborah
Langstaff, 24-year-old Primo Verdone, 42-year-old Russell Nyland, and
20-year-old Ashley Nyland.
20-year-old Brock Kelson and 44-year-old Deborah Nyland were
transported to Havasu Regional Medical Centre. Kelson succumbed to his
injuries and died at the hospital. Nyland - who called 911 after the
shooting - was transported to Sunrise Medical Centre in Las Vegas,
Nevada.
An amber alert was issued for 13-month old Cole Diez and four-year-old
Kaia Diez -- the two children the shooter took with him when he fled
the scene. According to the police report, Diez fathered the children
with Deborah Langstaff during a long-term relationship, but the couple
was estranged at the time of the incident.
At 3.22 am, local time on Saturday, police learned that Diez’s vehicle
was located three hours away from the crime scene, in front of a house
in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Around the same time, San Bernardino
County Sheriff Department deputies were being dispatched to the same
residence on a suicide report.
Diez was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his children
were found safe with relatives inside the home.
The motive for the shooting spree was still being investigated.
