WASHINGTON – A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 hit an area in the
Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Peru Sunday, but there were no
immediate reports of casualties or damage, the US government announced.
The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 1:57 local time (0657
GMT was located 158 kilometers (98 miles) west southwest of Trujillo,
Peru, according to the US Geological Survey.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now
used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that
ruptured and the total energy released.
