Fiji has been soaked by surges of sea water and heavy rain.
Villagers at Tukavesi on the island of Vanua Levu headed for the hills
after heavy waves came crashing into their homes on Sunday night, the
Fiji Times reported.
A tsunami warning was issued for most of the Pacific on Sunday morning
after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook Chile, killing more than 700
people.
Fiji's Disaster Management Office told New Zealand Radio that locals
had taken the warnings very seriously, with last year's deadly tsunami
fresh in their memory.
Police Spokesman, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, told AAP that people
along the coast of Vanua Levi were evacuated from their homes for about
an hour on Sunday night.
"The waves went into the village and receded back," Sokomuri said.
"Immediately after the waves receded people were instructed to return
to their villages ... (that was) about an hour after the incident
happened."
He said some homes and belongings had been damaged by the waves.
Fiji also copped heavy rain, caused by a low pressure trough moving
over the South Pacific island.
Families were moved to higher ground and some roads in Viti Levy and
Vanua Levu were closed on Monday.
Despite predictions by the Meteorology Department of flash flooding on
Tuesday, Sokomuri said the rain had eased.
"The rain is no longer falling ... the flood waters have receded and
everything is back to normal again."
