EMERGENCY services have swung into action this morning after a night of
record-breaking rain across the south-east Queensland coast.
Police, fire, ambulance and State Emergency Service officers are being
kept busy this morning directing traffic away from flooded roads and
assisting home owners and motorists, The Courier-Mail reports.
One person was rescued from the roof of a car at Rocklea in Brisbane,
shortly before 6am (AEST). Another man was plucked from the roof of his
car at Taigum.
Two people were also trapped in a car at Zillmere on the city's
northside.
Police are warning people to avoid areas around Enoggera and Ithaca
Creeks in Brisbane's inner-north with water levels still rising.
St Aidan’s College at Corinda is closed as is Darlington State School
about 30km from Beaudesert in southern Queensland.
An Education Queensland spokesman said schools at Upper Brookfield and
Bracken Ridge are open, despite reports to the contrary.
The weather is also playing havoc with public transport with a range of
bus services and some trains being held up by flooding.
Translink has warned bus commuters in Ipswich to expect delays and
buses on Brisbane's northside are running behind schedule due to
flooding at Bald Hills, Bracken Ridge, North Lakes, Brighton and
Sandgate.
On the Sunshine Coast a tree blocked the track between Nambour and
Yandina. Authorities are urging patience.
While most beaches across the Sunshine Coast remain closed, a number
have reopened this morning including Noosa, Mooloolaba main beach,
Mooloolaba spit, Bulcock spit and Discovery and Mudjimba at North Shore.
The coast had a brief glimpse of the sun this morning before the rain
came back.
According to the weather bureau rain is expected to ease today after
moderate to heavy falls throughout the morning.
The roads have remained clear since a single-vehicle crash at Federal
just north of Black Mountain closed both lanes just before 7am.
The male driver was transported to Nambour hospital with leg and arm
injuries and minor head wounds and the Bruce Highway reopened about 9am.
SES attended to a couple of sandbag and tarp-related jobs, and
performed traffic control at Cooroy.
