Seven people are missing and 44 have been plucked from liferafts after
a fishing boat sank in the Southern Ocean off New Zealand.
The Rescue Coordination Centre ordered the search after receiving an
alert from the vessel's emergency position indicating radio beacon at
4.40am local time on Wednesday.
The alert from the 82-metre trawler was followed shortly after by a
mayday call from the same position, approximately 400 nautical miles
east of Dunedin.
The New Zealand chartered foreign fishing vessel Oyang 70 had 51
foreign crew on board.
The mayday call was relayed by the fishing vessel the Almatal Atlantis,
which reported the Oyang 70 had sunk.
Search and rescue officer Christine Wilson said seven fishing vessels,
including the Almatal Atlantis, were searching for the missing crew
members.
Weather in the area was good, but foggy and extremely cold, she said.
An air force Orion was expected over the scene at about 10am.
