New Zealand: Kiwi Fruit Disease hits many more orchards
The number of kiwifruit blocks hit by the PSA bacterial disease
has risen to 139; an increase of 13 orchards in the past week.
Kiwi Vine Health, which is overseeing strategies to control the
disease, is urging growers and post harvest operators to remain
vigilant in monitoring orchards for early symptoms.
The agency has set up a PSA priority zone in the Te Puke area
covering a total of 665 hectares of kiwifruit to try and isolate
the most potentially damaging strain of PSA.
The Italian isolate of the disease has been confirmed on 25
kiwifruit blocks near Te Puke.
The agency says KVA's immediate objective is to aggressively
contain PSA and regular leaf sampling from orchards will begin
again shortly.
So far, 15-20 hectares of vines of infected kiwifruit have been
cut down.
