BOISE, Idaho - Federal officials say crews are battling more wildfires
in Idaho than in any other state. National Interagency Fire Center says
in a report Friday that about 312,600 acres, or roughly 490 square
miles, of active fires were burning in Idaho.
Authorities have reported dozens of blazes, large and small, that have
peppered forested parts of the state. Many were touched off by
lightning strikes during thunderstorms. One of the latest has erupted
on the southeastern corner of the Idaho National Laboratory property.
Known as the Middle Butte Fire, lab officials say crews are using
bulldozers and airplanes to help fight the blaze that has scorched
about 10,000 acres and is 30 percent contained.
In Valley County where the Hurd fire has charred 1,300 acres, some of
the 300 evacuated residents in the Tamarack Resort area were allowed
back in their homes Friday afternoon.
