PORT VILA, Vanuatu, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A magnitude 5.6 earthquake
struck under the ocean floor near the Pacific island nation of
Vanuatu but no tsunami alert was issued, U.S. seismologists said.
There were no reports of damage from the temblor, which hit 60
miles from the island of Tanna at a depth of around 9 miles at
11:28 a.m. EST Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey's National
Earthquake Information Center said.
Vanuatu, situated between Fiji and Australia north of New Zealand,
is on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" known for its seismic and
volcanic activity.
Since July, the 83 islands that make up Vanuatu have experienced
four earthquakes measuring 6.0 or above, and in May a 7.2 temblor
prompted a brief tsunami alert.
