Updated to latest and our timelines don't generate, just see the spinning wheel.

I notice that KUMC Experts is behaving the same....known issue?

Hi,

I kind of remember something going on with this, but I also kind of
think that I fixed it. On the other hand, that was all a long time ago,
so I could be wrong on either count.

I'll try to carve out some time tomorrow to look at it.

Hi,

While I do see that this is happening on the KUMC link below, it doesn't
seem to be happening in either my local environment or on UIUC
Connections. That is, on both of these I'm getting the timeline charts
as expected, e.g.

https://connections.ideals.illinois.edu/people/188-Lisa_Hinchliffe/keywords/timeline?utf8=%E2%9C%93&commit=Load+Timeline+Views

Of course this site is on the uiuc-connections branch, but I have master
checked out on my development machine and it seems fine as well. I will
think about it some more though.

Thanks, Howard. I looked a bit this morning, but didn't find the cause. I suspected another encoding problem, but doesn't seem to be. I'll look deeper tomorrow as well.
Do you recall what was happening before? Was it a problem with caching the timeline?

I'm not sure, but I'll take a peek in the commit logs and history later to see if I can find anything.

I still don't know. It appears that on the person's front page, e.g.

http://experts.kumc.edu/en/people/241-Diane_Persons%20-%20Timeline

the chart displays without difficulty. However on the timeline view not only does the chart not display, but the little keyword clouds don't display either, even though if you look in the html for the page they are there, e.g. on

http://experts.kumc.edu/en/people/241-Diane_Persons/keywords/timeline?utf8=%E2%9C%93&commit=Load+Timeline+Views

you'll find a ul with id "list-1983" and it has a variety of lis with keywords and search links, but they aren't displaying.  On Connections one of the uls has display: block and the others display: none, but this isn't happening on the KUMC site. Nor does the slider seem to be displaying correctly.

My guess is that this points to some sort of javascript issue. If I'm lucky I may even be able to see an error from KUMC in my browser.

And so it is:

Uncaught TypeError: Object [object Object] has no method 'slider'

This comes from timeline.js. I'll try to trace through what might be going on here.

It looks like Connections has a reference to jquery-ui.js in the HTML head

<script src="/javascripts/jquery-ui.min.js?1363730200" type="text/javascript"></script>

but this is not present for KUMC. I'd wager that this is the immediate problem; I don't know why that link would be missing for KUMC though. I'll see if I can find it.

What version of the jquery-rails gem are you guys using? It looks like both master and uiuc-connections have this at 2.2.x. For 2.x.y versions it seems to include jquery-ui, but it looks for the 3.x.y versions that is no longer included and the jquery-ui-rails gem is also needed.

I guess what I said might not be strictly true - I actually think that I
never got around to using the asset pipeline with Bibapp, so there are
still jquery libraries in the public/javascripts directory. However, I
think that maybe still the javascript link isn't generated by the call
to javascript_include_tag :defaults with jquery-rails-3.x.y unless
jquery-ui-rails-3.z.w is also installed.

Anyway - let me know about that version information and we'll see if
that helps. I can probably just push up the version of jquery-rails and
add jquery-ui-rails in master without breaking anything if that turns
out to be the fix.

We're using jquery-rails 3.0.1. I was unaware of the jquery-ui-rails requirement. I'm adding it now and testing.

I have it working now. I went ahead and moved assets to app/assets, but don't know yet if I broke anything else. You can also get by without using asset pipeline.
Changes:
Add gem 'jquery-ui-rails' to Gemfile
Add config.assets.enabled = true to config/application.rb
Add the following to public/javascripts/application.js:
  //= require jquery
  //= require jquery_ujs
//= require jquery.ui.all // That's probably more than we need.
Replace = javascript_include_tag :defaults with = javascript_include_tag :application in app/views/layouts/application.html.haml
Moved public/stylesheets|images|javascripts to app/assets/stylesheets|images|javascripts
Ran  bundle exec rake assets:precompile RAILS_ENV=development to precompile assets to public/assets

I have a vague recollection that I had some sort of problem with the asset pipeline and that's why I didn't go ahead and do that too, but YMMV. Let me know how it goes. I'll see if just adding jquery-ui-rails to the Gemfile and letting jquery-rails go up to 3.x seems to work, and if so I'll put that in master, which should be enough to protect people like you who may go to newer versions of the gem.

That didn't work for me, which is what prompted me to move on to the Asset Pipeline. From jquery-ui-rails/readme:
"This gem packages the jQuery UI 1.10.0 assets (JavaScripts, stylesheets, and images) for the Rails 3.1+ asset pipeline"
But, maybe I just didn't add the necessary require statements to application.js to make it work.

Maybe I'm being too complex and I just need to directly add a javascript tag linking to the included jquery-ui.

But let me know how you fare with the asset pipeline - I'd be happy to just do that. I just can't remember now why I stopped with
it in the first place.

I may have found out the hard way. Everything worked fine until I tried using Passenger in production. Ruby couldn't find stylesheets/lib/blueprint/blueprint.rb.

I just removed stylesheets/lib from assets, ran rake assets:clean, rake assets:precompile, and it works now. It seems that in production, Rails or Passenger eagerly loads those blueprint generators.
