I think this has been brought up here before, but I'd like to raise this issue again as it's staring to become a problem for us.

Bibapp does not allow for a work to be associated with a particular, or numerous particular groups.  The work just gets added to all the groups that the contributing author belongs to.  But in many cases, it is preferable to only associate a work with certain group(s).

Seems to me like there is no good way to automate this, so associating a work with a particular group needs to be done manually on a per work basis.

Perhaps on a Person's Verified Contributorships page there could be checkboxes representing the person's groups next to each work.

Thoughts?  We really need this functionality, and I'd like to start a discussion on the best way to do it.

Thanks,
John

Hi,

In one sense it's really easy to do. That is, it'd be really easy to add a has_many relationship between groups and works to allow them to be related.

The harder parts are, as you suggest, deciding how to handle editing these relationships in the interface and how  (or perhaps better to say where) to have the status of this relationship affect what is displayed and so forth. Then there are questions such as: if a person joins or leaves a group, what (if any) effect does this have on the relationship between her works and the groups. Etc. (In some sense my initial reaction is that the association between a work and group ought to be more permanent and is more fundamental than that between a person and group, as I think John is suggesting.)

By all means have some discussion about this and if people can come to a reasonable consensus about how it should work I'd be happy to implement it.

I agree, the relationship between and work and group needs to be permanent.

Another approach, FWIW, might be to create a relationship between works and groups through keyword and/or tag. If certain keywords are associated with groups, then works having those keywords/tags would belong to the group.

This topic has come up again for us and I'm hoping to revive the conversation. My thought is that a person's works could be associated with a group or groups at the contributorship level.  I've attached a rough mockup.

I know it's been a while since this topic was last discussed, so I'm happy to sum up this issue again if need be.
