The K-Lite Codec Pack Basic comes in three separate versions for different tiered users. From the simple basic pack, which includes the most common video and audio codecs and includes subtitle support, the K-Lite Codec Pack Basic version will allow the majority of users to watch and listen to their content with relative ease.

One main difference of K-Lite Codec Pack Basic is that it does not include Media Player Classic Home Cinema. This simple media player is the easiest to use, but not necessary in K-Lite Codec Pack Basic. Windows Media Player is more than enough for the small amount of codecs in this set.

The most common codecs like DirectShow, MKV decoders, and MP4 decoders are installed in K-Lite Codec Pack Basic so there is not much more needed for every day viewing. Even though K-Lite Codec Pack Basic supports audio, it is meant for video. With the numerous video codecs and encoders creating files that are high quality with smaller file sizes, native Windows support does not exist for all the variations.

The different tested content in K-Lite Codec Pack Basic included MP4, AVI, WMV, and MKV; all at different levels of quality and resolutions. The codec pack had no problem playing any of the files in Windows Media Player. K-Lite Codec Pack Basic also supports different subtitle formats like SRT, SUB, and IDX, but take a little customizing for the subtitles to display properly.

PS. Since for some reason AAC/HE-AAC/HE-AAC v2 (Which no AV Receiver or HT Processor no matter how expensive can decode) has become a really popular codec on downloads also note that ffdshow allows you to transfer muiltichannel AAC 5.1 over a TOSLINK or Coaxial output by decoding the AAC and recoding it to Dolby Digital 5.1 @ 640 kbps.
A better way is to use LAVFilters or whatever and let it decode the AAC 5.1 or 7.1 and send it as LPCM 5.1 or 7.1 over HDMI since you will always get some quality losses when deocding and then redocding to anon-lossless format (AC3 and DTS is non-lossless but LPCM is lossless).

Codec pack with codecs required to play common movies properly. Contains codecs such as divx, xvid, 3ivx, mpeg4, mpeg2, mp3, ogg, ac3, wma and many others.

Basic version contains only the most important things that will allow us to playback popular file formats. It is small enough to fit on a floppy disk or with a movie on the CD.

Information:
The K-Lite Codec Pack is a free collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.

There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: The Basic version is the smallest and doesn't include a player. The Standard version contains everything what is needed to play all the commonly used formats. The Full version contains even more codecs and also has encoding support.

Information:
VLC media player is an excellent open source multimedia player with its own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too. It can also be used as a server to stream on a (wired or wireless) high-bandwidth IP (Internet Protocol) version 4 or 6 network in multicast or unicast. VLC (VideoLAN Client) media player is cross-platform and supports Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Solaris, Crux Linux, Debian GNU (GNU's Not Unix) Linux, Familiar Linux, Fedora Core Linux, Gentoo Linux, Mandrake Linux, Red Hat Linux, Slackware Linux, Novell's SuSE (System und Software Entwicklung = System and software development) Linux, Turbo Linux, NetBSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), OpenBSD, FreeBSD, QNX, Zaurus and Windows CE (Windows Mobile) for Pocket PC.

Information:
The open source Xvid codec can play Xvid movies. Xvid is currently the most popular format for video. This package contains the Xvid DirectShow decoding filter and the Xvid VFW Codec.

Now, the problem is that after installing the k-lite and my application everything works perfectly (All videos plays perfectly). But after sometime some videos stops playing in both the components. At that time I checked whether it plays in actual (native) windows media player or not but it does not play in it also. Then if I uninstalls the K-lite and installs it again, video starts playing both in my application as well as native WM Player. This behavior happens again after some time.

The time after it happens can be anything between hours to days and every time it happens with different video formats. Also I checked it with different hardware and the behavior is same. What could be this problem? Is it a components (WMP activex and Media element) problem? Is it really that codecs crashing issue? or is this issue of codecs conflict with graphics driver?

Oddly, before I did that, I tried VLC (which supposedly contains an H265 codec). But, the Windows Video Troubleshooter still complained there was no HEVC codec and a sample video I tried came up with a black screen. With the free Microsoft version, that same video works fine.
