On April 17 and 18,the first Bhutanese Empowerment Conference was held
in Norcross, Georgia. It was sponsored by SEWA,which paid for Bhutanese
to attend It was attended by Indian and Bhutanese delegates from at
least 15 cities including Akron, Cleveland, Atlanta, Detroit, Lansing,
Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Dallas, Houston,Denver and San Antonio
There were between 50 and 60 delegates and a resolution of thanks was
passed to thank our government, agencies and volunteers for making
resettlement possible. An agreement was made to allow SEWA to prepare in
conjunction with the ABA(American Bhutanese Association) a charter for a
unified national non profit. We prioritized many issues, with youth
development and preserving traditions and cultures at the top. Housing,
Jobs and Womens Issues were also priorities
As to population, Atlanta has around 1850 (3/31), with Denver second and
Houston third. They will publish a population chart by state. The
Bhutanese community in Atlanta prepared a Nepalese dinner Saturday night
and did a cultural show and prayers. It was a great event and a fresh
start. Only problem I saw was the refusal of the other Bhutanese group
in Atlanta to participate despite an invitation. I will provide more at
a later date.
