Hello,

I hope this message finds you well.  I found your website through a search for services for the Bhutanese American community.

The Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence is increasingly receiving requests from advocates working with domestic violence survivors for printed materials in the Bhutanese language.  Does your organization publish or have access to any of these materials, especially any specifically dealing with domestic violence?  I would appreciate any information you can pass on to me.  Please reach me by phone at (415) 568-3315 or by email.

Thank you so much for any assistance you can offer.

Best regards,

Larnie Capistrano

I called and spoke with Larnie just now. She is dealing with the Bhutanese refugees so I told her the language she needed was Nepali, not Dzongka. I have handled a case of domestic violence here in NH (the husband is now separated from his wife by court order much to her wonderment and relief) and do not know of any materials in Nepali. In this situation it would not have helped as both spouses are illiterate. I mentioned that as an issue to Larnie. I suggested that she contact one of the resettlement agencies serving the San Francisco area and see if they have a Nepali interpreter on staff or as a volunteer who could translate material into Nepali for their use.

Somewhat related, I have sent information to the Massachusetts Office for Refugee & Immigration about the Nepali Dictionary Project suggesting they purchase dictionaries for communities in Mass that I do not work with. They agreed to look into it.

I also contacted Saheli, a small Mass non-profit that serves as advocates for South Asian women & do programs on domestic violence, legal rights etc. They were totally unaware of the Bhutanese community & have met with us to figure out how they can provide assistance to the New American Center where I volunteer.

Any state with a large South Asian population may have similar organizations

The majority of Bhutanese speak some Hindi. The young folks are fluent
in English. You may want to reach out to the Indian community to see if
they have a resource. We have a organization in Atlana called RAKSHA and
it works on family issues like this. You may want to call them
www.raksha.org

I will ask my Indian friend with the Sewa Indian help group if they have
any contacts in the Indian community who may be able to assist

Srikanth-any contacts in SF?

Damian,

I already spoke to them about the language and about finding an
interpreter in the SF Bay Area (of whom there are many) to do the writing.
