Dear BHTOM members,
I would like to advertise that we are starting an intensive follow-up campaign for a likely new Luminous Red Novae transient (related to a massive stellar merger) at about 30Mpc.
The transient has been classified as a SN IIn on TNS, but its close resemblance to LRNe and underluminous magnitude points it as a very good candidate to be a stellar merger rather than a SN. The object has been detected by several surveys, but it is likely in a chip gap for the ZTF detector, as they did not discover the object (yet).
To confirm this, we would need multi-wavelength follow-up. LRNe usually show a fast blue peak and a slower red peak. We would expect this object to become increasingly redder past the blue peak. We are now just reaching the blue peak, so higher cadence (nightly) would be ideal.
The target has already been added to BHTOM with the following ID.
You can also see the spectrum on TNS.
Its current magnitude in r-band is 18.5.
Thank you and best regards,
Nadia
