Here is another explanation of our PYP from Dr. Hillberry.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kruzman
Dear Parents,
Today’s Lesson: Instructional Practice in the PYP: Part 3
Last week you learned how the written curriculum connects to actual classroom practices in the areas of instruction and assessment in a PYP school. This week we’ll see how teachers take their professional practice to a higher level through the reflective process.
What is involved in a collaborative teacher reflection?
The IBO structures the reflective process as carefully as the planning process. On the PYP Planner, four sections are devoted to documenting the reflective process upon completion of a unit. Those sections include:
To what extent did we achieve our purpose? In this section, the team must consider what evidence they can produce that shows students developed an understanding of the unit’s central idea, and that students made a connection between the central idea and the transdisciplinary theme. They must review the summative assessment results, discuss other work from the unit, and share anecdotal records. Teachers must attach examples of evidence to the PYP Planner as documentation. As part of their response to this section, teachers consider improvements that could be made to the unit and note those on the planner to carry forward to the next year.
To what extent did we include the elements of the PYP? Here teachers must document the learning activities that helped students achieve an understanding of the concepts, transdisciplinary skills, learner profile attributes, and attitudes. Not all activities from the unit will be listed, but instead this section should document a reflective discussion of those activities that were particularly engaging and effective. Again, teachers use this section of the planner to document suggested changes to the unit to be taken into consideration the following year.
What student-led inquiries arose from the learning? This section gives teachers an opportunity to reflect on the breadth and quality of questions that arose from their students over the course of the unit. These questions help teachers develop an understanding of the range of conceptual understanding of their students, and again assists them in modifying the unit as needed for the next year. In this section teachers should also consider the success of their own planned questions in driving student inquiries.
What student-initiated actions arose from the learning? Student action is one of the most exciting aspects of the PYP (we’ll discuss it more in depth in our next lesson). In this section of the planner, teachers will document how student learning prompted student-led action. In other words, how did students take initiative to make a difference in their worlds based on what they learned?
How does this benefit my student?
Collaborative reflection is profoundly different practice than what occurs in schools where teachers function independently from their colleagues. Not only do teachers work collaboratively together to plan and implement best practices in the classroom, they are dedicated to a deep, thoughtful analysis of the results of their efforts. In this way they engage in healthy dialogue about their teaching and student learning, are able to identify weak points in their practice that need mitigating, and are able to respond quickly and appropriately to address any areas of the curriculum where students aren’t meeting with success. This habit of reflection carries over into the daily practice of students regarding their own learning, and has also become habitual in all aspects of our staff’s decision-making regarding school operations as we set our own learning goals over time. Reflection is yet another aspect of the PYP that truly sets it apart!
Coming next week, our focus will shift from teachers to students, as we examine the role of students taking action in the PYP!
