http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/9338356/One of the big stories in Raleigh this weekend was the apparent murder of one of our classmates, Cheannell Marie Mickens. Cheannell and I sat together in Mrs. Perkins' homeroom in 8th grade at Daniels and she was always "full of life" - what that really means is that she was always talking and wanting to laugh, so we had a lot in common. She used to pick on me, but in a laughing way and I always liked seeing her around the halls of Broughton.
I was elated that she was able to make it to the 20th reunion, but I think she was even more elated. When I saw here she just glowed as she told me how much it meant to her that she was able to come. Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to her for very long. It seemed like that night went by in 15 minutes' time.
Obviously it's sad to see this story apply to one of our classmates. We all hope to life a full life and die peacefully. Cheannell had a hard time and didn't seem to catch too many breaks along the way. That's sad, but even sadder was the apparent way it all ended. I hope she is happy and having an easier time knowing that some people from the old days remember her fondly.
