Herbie made many lifelong friends in Mirando City and many of them remained close friends their entire lives. These included Sonny (Tuy) Gayle, Billy (Chata) Akers, Donald (Dache) Akers, Lawrence (Juni) Carpenter, Jackie Moore, Jim Bixler and many more. Growing up in a small town made them create their own entertainment, which at times was not very smart. An important part of his legacy was the stories he and his friends told to the next generation. The boys had their own language, which only they understood. Herbie would even write notes to his friends using that language so the wives could not read them
Upon graduation, Herbie, Donald Akers and Sonny Gayle enrolled in the University of Corpus Christi for one year. The second year, Herbie and Sonny joined Jackie Moore at San Marcos Teacher's College. After one semester, the Korean War was starting and the boys returned home to await their draft. Herbie did not pass his physical due to a hernia, so Sonny and Jackie left him at home as they went to serve their country.
Herbie moved to Kingsville and went to work for Celanese at Bishop. He married the love of his life, Sue Ann Felton and the two moved to Bishop to begin their life together.
Upon retirement, Herbie and Sue Ann moved to Boerne and enjoyed many years in the country there. In the years since Sue Ann's passing, Herbie was surrounded by wonderful friends and caregivers. One in particular was Yvonne Esquivel who cared for and loved him dearly.
Sam Lovett became an important part of Herbie in his later life. We treasured Sam and his family. He and Herbie shared a love of the Lord as well as the Brush Country where they had both lived. Arrowhead hunting was an activity that excited them both.
Because of Sam and Yvonne, Herbie was able to fulfill his desire to remain in his own home until the Lord called him home. Every day he and Yvonne would feed and watch the wildlife - especially the birds and deer.
Herbie passed away from this life peacefully in Texsan Hospital of San Antonio on April 27, 2025.
