As a child, Butch lived in several towns while his family relocated for his father’s work with United Gas. His outgoing nature and gift for conversation helped him quickly feel at home in each new community. He attended Edna High School, where he excelled in several sports, earned All-State honors as a quarterback, and participated in All-State Choir and National Thespians. After graduation, he attended Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree and participated in choir and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following college, Butch traveled with the USO, performing on military bases in Japan, the Philippines, and Hawaii. After returning home, he served as choir director at Bishop ISD and later completed a Master of Education degree from the University of Houston.
In August 1970, Butch moved to Lake Jackson to become choir director at Freeport Intermediate. There he met Delia Elizabeth Mays, also a teacher, and the two were married over Thanksgiving break on November 27, 1970. Together they built a loving family and were blessed with three children: Norman Prell, Geneva Elizabeth, and Jansen Louis Carlton.
Butch was a dedicated educator who touched the lives of countless students throughout his career. He served as choir director in Bishop ISD, Angleton ISD, and several schools in Brazosport ISD, where his choirs earned numerous honors. He also served as choir director at several churches in the community. After 43 years of teaching, he retired from Brazosport ISD in 2010.
Butch was deeply devoted to God and his family. He would drive across Texas at a moment’s notice to help those he loved. He spent countless hours supporting his children and grandchildren in sports, golfing and fishing at Riverside Country Club, and making the most of summer breaks with memorable camping trips. Butch was the best husband and father his family could have asked for. His faith in Jesus Christ kept the family grounded and centered, and he will be dearly missed. His final wish was to “eat with his Maker.”
Butch is survived by his wife, Delia; their three children, Prell (Risha), Geneva Harper (Dustin), and Jansen; his grandchildren, Bailey Elizabeth Broom, Anna Michelle Broom, Thomas Bronson Williams, Keith Wayne Harper, and Henry Adis Harper; his sister, Martha Luedtke; his sisters-in-law, Hilda Broom and Becky Dusek (Cliff); his aunt, Daphon Broom Gebhardt; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
