Juanita “Janie” C. Dominguez, 87, passed away early Monday morning, August 17, 2026, at her Bishop residence surrounded by her three daughters. The youngest of seven children, Janie was born in Pearsall, Texas, on March 11, 1939, to Simona (Chacon) and Jesus Cardenas. Upon relocating to Bishop, she attended school and met her future husband, Carlos H. Dominguez. They raised a family together and were married until his death in 2012.
Janie had a heart for service: to her family, to God and to the Bishop community. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, tia, prima and, of course, comadre. She was an exceptional homemaker and her tamales were addictively delicious. Her love of cooking spilled over into her work in the kitchen with the St. Elizabeth Society at St. James Catholic Church, where she was a faithful lifetime member. As for the Bishop community, Janie was a dedicated volunteer and committed public servant. During her life, she was involved with Community Action, American GI Forum, Bishop CISD PTA, Bishop Band Boosters, Volunteer Food Bank, and American Legion Post 185 (Women’s Auxiliary). She also served as an elected member of the Bishop CISD School Board for 18 years and the Bishop City Council for 12 years, during which time she served as Mayor Pro Tem. She received numerous awards, recognitions and acknowledgements during her life, most notably Outstanding Citizen, Woman of the Year and Who’s Who Hispanic Women of America. Janie loved her Bishop Badger sports, Dallas Cowboys, conjunto music, gambling, and her beverage of choice, Miller Lite. She was also a cancer survivor and die-hard Democrat.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesus and Simona Cardenas; her siblings, Augustina Lira, Adolfo Cardenas, Jesus Cardenas, Jr., Eloy Cardenas, and Maria DeLeon; and her husband, Carlos H. Dominguez.
Janie leaves behind a strong generational legacy that includes her three daughters, Sylvia (Virgie) D. Alvarado, Carla J. Dominguez, and Cynthia M. Dominguez; one brother, Santiago “Jimmy” Cardenas; grandchildren, Chris (Norma) Alvarado, Adam (Nancy) Alvarado, Celeste (Esteban) De La Paz, Trey (Valerie) Gonzalez, and Charles (Erika) Gonzalez; great-grandchildren, Ascencia, Adam James, Kyle, Mason, Ciana, Jared, Ashlynn, EJ, Calista, Luke, Rozlyn, Carlos, Remy, and Elodie; great-great grandchildren, Ryanne, Amara, and Cameron; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and comadres/compadres, not mention the American Legion and St. James Catholic Church familias that she adored.
The family will receive condolences from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary; with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A mass of christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at St. James Catholic Church. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery.
