As a reminder, Safety Week is a way for us to reinforce our safety protocols and systems and to ensure that our communication systems are in proper working order for all individuals in our school community.
Today, many students learned about age-appropriate preparedness strategies in their classrooms and more about terminology that will be used in emergency situations. Our school resource officers will be visiting our schools this week to continue forming strong relationships with our students.
BHS compiled some resources on our Health and Wellness page to aid in at-home conversations. Our counselors, psychologists, and social workers will continue to provide support in our schools throughout the week.
Tomorrow, students and staff are invited to reflect and dream about what their ideal safe space would look like through a drawing, creative writing, or their choice of artistic creation. This is an optional district-wide Safe Space Activity for students to complete on their own time or in the classroom.
Terms and Definitions to review:
Lockdown: A lockdown is the complete shutdown of a building in the event of an intruder or other threat within the building. In the event of a lockdown, no external visitors may enter a building. ALICE procedures may be utilized during a lockdown.
Shelter in Place: Shelter in Place is used when an external threat is close to or at another BHS location, but off school property. No one may enter or leave during a Shelter in Place, but school functions as normal within the building. Families will not be able to pick up children during a shelter in place.
Family Assistance Center (commonly referred to as a reunification site): A Family Assistance Center is the location that is communicated to families following an evacuation of a building for any reason. Students will be transported to the Family Assistance Center and guardians will be connected with their students. The location of the FAC will only be communicated to families in the event of an emergency.
Remind: Remind is a standard BHS communication tool. Families may choose to receive Remind text messages, notifications, or emails. It is recommended that all families review their Remind setting and update their contact information in the Parent Portal in order to receive up to date information in the event of an emergency. More information will be sent to families on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 about updating their settings.
